Drawdown Extension of Lake Billy Chinook, Portland General Electric

      Dear Shoreline Structure Owner,

On September 16, 2023, Portland General Electric and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs began gradually drawing down the water level in Lake Billy Chinook to allow for necessary maintenance to the spillway at Round Butte Dam. Delays to the maintenance schedule to complete additional work have resulted in the need to hold the reservoir at the lower level longer than initially anticipated.

We anticipate that the reservoir will now be held at the lower level until mid-April to allow PGE and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs to complete planned maintenance and repairs to Round Butte Dam, an important source of emissions-free power. We will begin refilling when construction is complete and anticipate Lake Billy Chinook will reach regular summer levels no later than June 5, 2024.

PGE anticipates that the temporary change in water level will have no impact to water quality, fish, or wildlife populations in the reservoir. Some boat launches may remain inaccessible until the reservoir returns to its typical level, including the boat launch at Perry South campground. Users can find an available launch at the Crooked River day-use area of The Cove Palisades State Park in the meantime. For updates on launch closures and reservoir access, visit the PGE Parks webpage.

We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any questions, please contact me.

      Thank you,

      Mike Schubert
